I agree with ponys (reasons below)
Such a system will be designed that if it starts getting too hot, the fans will ramp up to the max. When most laptop fans hit max speed they are very loud.

There will be a temp sensor to shut off the system before it gets too hot to damage components. I expect that some component got hot enough to not function properly, but not do permanent damage.

Let it cool down and restart and it should operate normally.
