The scheme makes sense when you're playing so many back ups.
BYU doesn't and never has had the overall team speed necessary to play an all out pressure defense. I'm actually impressed with our defensive backfield. Sometimes the soft middle of the zone allows for teams to exploit it, but over the top, BYU has not been that weak. I can remember the 1985 when UCLA beat BYU long to win a game BYU should have won.
