Points per game is an antiquated metric.
There's a reason in basketball no one uses that anymore. They all start with points per possession, then go from there. But for some reason, in football, it's been slower to catch on.

Coming into today, FEI ranked BYU's offense as #15 in the country, and BYU's defense as #62. BYU is scoring 2.62 points per drive on offense, which ranks #37 in the country; meanwhile, BYU is allowing 2.27 points per drive on defense, which ranks #70 in the country.

Perhaps S&P rates BYU's defense as better, but this year's info is behind a pay-wall, so I can't say.
