I think you just nailed it. I don't remember hearing it used during youth or HS
football, and I can't say it was part of my football vocabulary over many years as a fan . . . until recently. It's such an obvious but technical term, I figured it must be in the rulebooks. And I feel more people recently have started using it in casual discussion and certainly in broadcasting.

That's probably what brought it into more common usage, but Greg Wrubell has been using it for 20 years.
