But it's not always a "yard line". It is 10 yards from the previous first down.
in some cases this is exactly at a yard line (as in the case after a touchback), but more often it is an invisible line that is 10 yards from the previous position of the last first down spot. That is why they say "line to gain" Its always been the official name of that line, but has become more used as replay has taken off.
