I think Olson was told that he would definitely play and would become the starter after that. He had his whole family fly out for the game... the game became a gigantic mess and Curtis Brown basically went beast mode in the game... Olson didn't play at all, so the coaching staff decided to red shirt him that season...

He announced he was leaving for a mission... I think when he got back, that's when Crowton left... either way I don't think Olson had any intention of coming back to BYU.

I don't think Olson leaves for a mission if he played in that USU game.
