first was when he was brought in by Alabama to be their athletic director for a short time to clean up after some scandals. I went with some friends to see BYU play at Alabama and did a double check while walking past him before the game.
The second, was obviously more meaningful. He was the patriarch that gave my oldest son his patriarchal blessing in 2013. He was patriarch for a BYU Stake (possibly more than one I don't know). We were invited to his home along with my son. My wife was shocked when I didn't bring up BYU sports at all. It didn't seem like the right setting. Although I would have loved to chat with him about BYU sports. I confess the thought flashed through my mind when he found out my son is the oldest and he said, "Lead off man. Better get on base."
