Being a head coach requires more than simply being good with X's and O's. Chow and Anae both have direct, abrasive personalities, and they might have struggled with being the face of the BYU program. Like others have mentioned, it's not like other schools were lining up for them to interview for their open HC jobs. Chow eventually got the Hawaii gig, but he wasn't very successful. He did have some impressive OC jobs/performances at NC State and USC, and then he had a stint in the NFL at Tennessee. The first time that Anae left BYU, he took a demotion to be a position coach at Arizona before returning to Provo a second time. If anything, he should be grateful that BYU gave him the opportunity to be an OC, and for all of the money that he has made plying his trade as an OC since that time.
