I was on our church basketball team my senior year but my twin bro wasn’t because he was on the actual high school team that I didn’t make. I was enjoying a season of notoriety, averaging a solid double double against stiff competition, and making a name for myself in the local meeting houses. Once my twin’s high school basketball season ended, he could officially join our church team (his coach wouldn’t let him play with us scrubs and risk injury) and became the lead player and I was relegated to a role player. My stats quickly plummeted as our wins started to pile up. Fast forward to the championship game. We were down by two points with one possession left. My twin bro had something like 35 points and had been on fire. I had about 35 fouls but the refs had missed most of them. We drew up the last play for my twin to take a potential game winning three in the corner. I was to be the one to swing the ball to him for the final shot. I left the timeout determined to make the critical pass. When the ball came to me, I saw my twin wide open in the corner… like nobody within 8 feet of him. I had every intention of passing to him but instead, I suddenly pump-faked a pass to him and my defender bit on it beautifully and I found myself wide open. I hesitated for a second and then I took my shot at glory and heaved up the shot. The ball sailed through the air seemingly in slow motion. It literally missed the rim and the backboard by three feet and bounced out of bounds as the final buzzer sounded.
All my teammates were so annoyed with me. My twin was fuming. It was raining outside and I just remember walking home alone in the rain. To this day my buddies and twin bro don’t let me live that shot down.
But at least now I know the outcome. I would have always wondered haha
