I didn't even know the story. There is a lesson. Don't attack people.
I assume some booed in jest and some were visibly angry. And if your actions cause people to cry, I don't think you need any other indication that you've gone too far. This is Golden Rule stuff.

But why does this happen with Basketball fans? We have a somewhat recent story where the newspapers had to overly edit the comment boards to protect a BYU player. Even if one is right it shouldn't give anyone with character the freedom to attack. We've all done it I think, and that makes it incredibly relevant for us. Religion is not checked at the door when we want to.

I think it is incredibly relevant today. I just watched an Arkansas soccer game where the majority of fans constantly berated the referee, for no good reason. It made me sad to see it. It was too much. Made it hard to enjoy the game. All I could think was, these people need to chill out. They are very close to crossing a line.
