My brothers and friends ask me about rule/ strategy minutiae all the time during games. I played and then coached a
little and try to stay up on rules and changes, mostly because not knowing bugs me. So I’m the default guy that explains to them what targeting means now, why the side judge threw his hat, or how the kicking team contacting a falling punt makes a “muffed punt recovery” impossible for them so the returner might as well try to scoop it and run. Whatever they want clarification on or a little more info, I’m supposed to know.

So when this was happening over and over, my brother looked at me and said, “So if that’s not holding, what is holding?!”

All I could say is, “It’s whatever the refs say it is… hopefully consistently and evenly throughout the game. Because objectively… I just don’t know anymore.”

It’s super frustrating to me.
