And get a good evaluation of the emotional, alma mater, old ties to better days reasoning for making a hire.

Lane Kiffin at USC. He wasn't ready. It was a reach. He hadn't really done anything to deserve it. But he was an alum, wife a former cheerleader, and he was assistant under Pete Carroll. What a story book hire. No way it goes wrong, right?

Brady Hoke at Michigan. After Rich Rod, they wanted a Michigan Man. Hoke had been an assistant there, so hire him. Where is he now?

Charlie Strong was doing great at Louisville. Jumps to Texas and flames out. Maybe better off staying put. Get the ACC invite and big pay raise while building on the winning culture you alrwady created.

One thing is true in football. There will always be new opportunities for coaching. It isn't that important to strike while the iron is hot. Most of the jobs will be open again in 4-5 years, so no need to rush into a situation just because it's a dream job or pays more.
