All the talk about BYU “getting in” with one loss, two losses, etc is a waste of time. You only need to ask yourself “which P5 league is the committee going to take that Fiesta Bowl bid from in order to give it to BYU?” Answer: none of them, if they have any excuse not to.
Losing any game is an excuse. Winning all our games with too easy a schedule is also an excuse. Both give the CFP the cover they need to leave a team like BYU out and still maintain a shred of credibility. They will leave us “just outside” as well (ranked #13, for example) to show that they REALLY like BYU (head pat) but we just didn’t do enough.
It’s not a conspiracy, it’s the reason the system was set up in the first place. The CFP exists to make teams like Utah and Pitt appear to be better and/or different than teams like BYU and SDSU. If you boil down the committee’s job to its most basic form, that’s it. So nothing about the last 24 hours should surprise anyone.
