I'm assuming saying anything but "I will sell my soul to the duck" could come across as "no direction for the program" or at least "not the direction we see as affective". My gut says he took the interview for "lets see" purposes and his heart wasnt in it 100% or not enough to go in and say what he knows they want to hear.
