Its unfortunate. My son is an athlete but also started playing an instrument in
middle school. I knew he would never play in the high school marching band because his sports will end up dominating his free time more and more as he gets older, but I would have loved for him to continue playing his instrument a bit longer just to have that additional skill and hobby. But he bailed on middle school band pretty early on, and I'm pretty sure the social group dynamics were part of that (the rest was the teacher who wanted the kids to love band more than they loved anything else).

In high school more than 30 years ago, I managed to both play varsity sports and do some music (I sang in a choir) in high school, although I didn't navigate the social situations very gracefully at times (I tried embarrassingly hard to show everyone that my sports came first). But back then in Utah it seemed that there were enough people who did both that you could sort of have a foot in both worlds if you wanted to do that. Seems far more difficult to do that where I live in CA now.
