I went to BYU in the 80's. In 1980 President Holland announced his $100 million
plan to get $100 million in donations for the endowment by the end of the decade. Pretty ambitious.
Got it done by 1987. Why? The football and the men's Bball programs made alums proud and they donated back to BYU.
I think the brethren know the situation well.
