We just put all new smoke detectors in our house and the instructions
specifically say NOT to put one in the garage.
Also the ones we got are hard wired (Kidde brand) and detect both smoke and CO. Just requires 3 wires (white, black and red) so they're fully integrated with the house wired system.
They also have 10 year sealed batteries so no 9v swaps.
