I get not wanting a big TV as the focal point of where guests enter/congregate
It is kind of unattractive to have your living room near the front door centered around a screen.

But I assume you have a family room or something in addition to the living room, where it makes sense to have a big screen for movies and sports.

Also, if you have kids, I would tell her that if you have a 40-inch TV, your house will never be the house where their friends gather. Every weekend night your kids will be (or want to be) elsewhere . . .
