I'm assuming this will be really dated, but when I was that age I really liked the Alistair MacLean books. Titles like:
Where Eagles Dare
Ice Station Zebra
The Guns of Navarone
Force 10 from Navarone
Athabasca
Bear Island
Santorini
Many of these were made into movies.
For those interested - make sure and get the books that he actually wrote - not any of the ghost writers who wrote under his name.
