Maybe Covid was the volcano eruption. Students just do not care (I would probably express it more strongly, but obviously avoiding the french). School districts, states, administration - I don't know, they all gave up on discipline of students. The best students will still perform at a high level, but the lowest performers are going to have very interesting futures 'peaceful' protesting and stuff, living off welfare, etc.
