You always want to err on the side of mercy, but don't want to enable them
That is why setting up the self reliance plan is so important for accountability. You can cut them some slack a few times, but if it is more than a few times, they can be taking advantage of the system. If clear expectations are set up-front, than it is on them to follow through.

The hard thing is that the fallback excuse is sickness or health issues, or car issues. That is where they need to be told ahead of time that if any of those things come up, they need to reach out and let you know ahead of time- not when they have an eviction notice. A lot of them know how to work the system and wait until it is an emergency. Maybe they get one emergency bail out, and that is it. The next time they need to be on top of things enough to not make their emergency your emergency.

It is hard to make the decision, but sometimes it is best to let people learn from the natural consequences of their own actions, and not shield them from them.

At the same time, I would rather they be accountable for taking advantage of the system than me being accountable for not helping when God would want them to be helped.

I get the frustrations!
