It's really the undergrads who make it possible. A large chunk of undergrads want to go to medical school so they clamor for chances to do work on research. When I taught in the Life Sciences college a lot of my colleagues had their own projects (three to four) and then lots of student run projects they 'mentored'. Lots of the student run projects never finish but the shear number of them means a good amount do and get published
These student then often get fast tracked for a graduate program in life science which tend to be free since BYU pays for most of the students masters programs in the Life Science College.
