publication - that research doesn't just lead to publications that might be read only by other experts in the field. It leads to teaching up-to-date learning and new theories. My personal anecdote: as an undergraduate at BYU I judged my teachers on their entertainment skills, as I had no basis of knowing what was up to date or not. As a grad student in an Ivy League school with professors who were world class scholars (multiple books/articles published) in their fields, I finally realized what they taught - well informed, current material, applying new theories bringing new insights - was more important and beneficial to my education than that actor whose lectures were based on his 25-year old notes from grad school, no matter how funny he was.
