In like the 70s I believe they were against it - but having one would not have had any effect on church standing, temple worthiness, etc.
00s/10s the handbook counseled to discuss it with their bishop, who in most cases - if they were asked at all - would just say umm I don’t like talking about this either, you guys make your own decision.
That section was totally removed from the handbook a few years ago.
