I saw this happen to my wife's nephew
He played the highest level of club soccer his entire life but he lived in Bingham's boundaries. There were only two spots on Varsity available when he tried out and the coach's son was trying out the same year, so there was really just one. He basically lost his identity when soccer was taken away from him and he's sort of fallen into a malaise in the years since it happened. At the time I told his parents he should transfer to West Jordan, Riverton, or Herriman just so he could play, which he clearly could. They didn't understand why they should do that and kept him at Bingham. He has kind of fallen apart since it happened, he doesn't want to do anything and is now even becoming disinterested in the Church. Many people don't understand what its like to have your personal identity taken away from you before you're ready to move on. Most kids understand athletics is over when they graduate high school, but to have it taken away when you're 15 is an entirely different story.
