Top Gun. I can't remember what they called it back then, but it became what is technically the "Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor" program or SFTI, which everyone really just calls the Top Gun program.

Of course, Top Gun is also a designation for certain pilots at competitions as well as you mentioned. All of these people are incredible pilots regardless, and you're right...it takes a special breed of human to do it.
