Sounds like the pool company many not have any recourse.
You're offering another $2k ($4k total) and they've already done the work. The onus is on them to explain why you're responsible for the rest.

I suspect there are lots of customers who are too "nice" (or too non-confrontational) to stand up to it, other than to complain about it family and friends on CB (while still forking over the extra money). You don't have to be that customer.
