involved in negotiations for the rights from the Tolkien estate. They spent $260 million on them. I don't think Bezos was ever under any allusions of making money on LotR. He's just a Tolkien super fan. I think he'll spare no expense to make sure the production is as good as possible. Hopefully the story the writers come up with is good as well.
