Start with an easier cook you can't mess up too much to get the feel of things
Like chicken, 321 ribs, or pork butt (this is usually a good overnight learning exp). Some people will go out and drop $80 on a brisket for their first cook and totally ruin it because they haven't taken time to learn their smoker.

Don't rely on the temp that's set on the smoker itself, test and verify. My camp chef runs about 25 degrees hot, so if I want 225 I set the dial at 200.
