Ibis is a solid brand that is known for their carbon fiber bikes (out of your
price range).
But they offer aluminum frame versions of a few of their most popular CF frames.
Check out their Ripmo AF or Ripley AF models.
They are really nice bikes.
(And as a former dirt bike rider, I can confirm that mountain bike riding will come very naturally to you — once you realize that twisting the right grip will not help you go up hills any easier.)
