The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, PAC 12, and SEC autonomy as far as governance was concerned. Since then, they have largely operated independent of the NCAA and other schools.
That status cannot be revoked, as long as the conferences maintain at least 6 members. Any fewer members and the conference seeks to exist.
