Golden handcuffs of a Federal employee…once you have 17 years in, 13 more makes
too much financial sense for retirement to walk away. And I really don’t have any idea what I would rather do instead, so I just look forward to retirement. The difference, however, is I don’t hate my job, and I am not working a million hours. So, I’ll keep going, looking forward to retirement.

However, I had a high school teacher who left big time finance to teach after getting burned out. He made way less money, but he was happy, a great teacher, and for him it was worth it. Same thing with a college professor who got his PhD at 40 and was a great poly sci professor at BYU. That kind of career change isn’t for everyone. It would take some soul searching to make that kind of change. But, short of that, perhaps a different job is worth at least considering because no one ever says at the end of their life they wish they could have worked more. I wish you luck.
