Is it critical to my success? Likely no. Is it meaningful for us, likely to a degree.
In as much as having a vision is “beginning with the end in mind,” its value is that we have defined how we want the business to feel and operate internally. It defines certain expectations. We refer to it often to ensure we are heading towards that desired goal/vision. I have every new hire read it and ask them if they can commit to it. It is somewhat empowering for our employees. I get asked fewer questions than I would without it. I don’t have to micromanage because we have defined certain expectations.
We also have a mission statement. It defines what we want our work to achieve. It defines our primary purpose.
Neither the vision nor the mission mention anything about money. But, if we are in line with both statements, the money will certainly take care of itself.
Could my business be a success with out them? Probably. Are we better off because we have them? Very likely.
