Spent five wreaks at Camp Hanson in training though I was stationed at MCAS Iwakuni as a Marine in those days. At the time (1962), the various services had football teams and they were good. In fact, BYU recruited several of the Marines later. I returned to Japan later as a missionary, got a doctorate in the field and worked for many years as a professor. I recently published a book on the Japanese side of World War II about the wartime Japanese ambassador to the Soviet Union. The truth is very revealing!
