I think part of the problem is that people wanted a space opera that borrowed heavily from Star Wars or Star Trek and instead got a duller affair that borrowed heavily from Interstellar (time dilation, protagonist encounters himself across time, protagonist encounters crazy stranded guy who tries to screw him over, etc.).
The woke stuff has been overstated in some ways but wasn't lost on a niece who expressed confusion at the couple's gender.
Effects were good and visuals were crisp, but planet was boring. One planet, no interesting ships, no interesting aliens, whole story is just one frankly uninteresting guy trying to leave somewhere. Just doesn't add up to much entertainment, especially for kids. Cat was good though.
