A lot of it comes from the appendices in Return of the King. But I am pretty
sure that in Fellowship of the Ring that when Gandalf is telling Gollum's backstory, he mentions Gollum was one of the Stoors.
But I moved recently and can't find my copy of LOTR, so I can't find that passage right now.
