The listed atmospheric maximum speed of the T-65B X-wing Starfighter in Star War's own published lore is 1050 kph or 652 miles per hour. That's roughly the speed of an F86 Saber of the Korean War (679mph).

Face it, the Star Wars universe physics are flat out slow-mo. When you can block blaster fire with swords (or simply duck after the trigger is pulled), you are at a huge disadvantage with the speed of modern warfare.
