This isn't solely on Kalani. Do you understand what he's had to work with form a budget standpoint? 50+ years worth of BYU underpaying and underhiring.
By way of reminder, his first staff:
Ed Lamb: Lots of coaching experience. Interesting philosophies. Helped Kalani a lot in those early years.
Ty Freaking Detmer: Never coached in college, ever.
Reno Mahe: Never coached before in his life
Ben Cahoon: Had coached a bit before, but was not coaching prior to this job.
Mike Empey: Had coached a little, but was not coaching prior to this job
Steve Clark: Weber State. Most "senior" person on the O staff, experience wise.
Tuiaki: Brand new DC, DL coach before, decent experience.
Steve Kaufusi: Retained from previous staff, had most experience on the D staff
Jenaro Gilford: Just finished up as a grad assistant or had JUCO experience
Look at that, only 3 defensive coaches (4 with Lamb splitting his duties). This was so much budget driven and typical BYU.
He had little to no choice in his first Offensive staff and had little to no budget. He cleaned house with the original O staff, increased their pay and has a decent thing going.
He is now able to do that on the D side of the ball. He is now able to pay experienced coaches instead of hiring "up and comers."
