Don't give into your kids until you're ready to get one.

Easily some of the dumbest posts I see on social media are "So this cute little guy is free to a loving home. Sadly we discovered we're unable to take care of him...blah, blah, blah...I have allergies..blah, blah, blah....we're moving and won't be able to take him with us...blah, blah, blah........it's too much to take care of between the kids and the dog...blah, blah, blah"

And no you didn't just suddenly discover that you or your wife are magically allergic to them one day. At your age you already know if you're allergic to dogs or cats.

Do your research and know ahead of time there's a time and patience commitment to training a puppy or young dog.
