They knew he was going to struggle when he was hired. He was a first time
college OC along with first time HC and inexperienced everything else on offense.
Injuries were way worse on the offensive side of the ball that year than any other year I remember.
That being said, having watched him Coach for a few years at our high school, I believe he is a better HC than OC. I wonder if he had that role at BYU, how it would have gone. If Grimes came as OC at same time as Detmer, I bet BYU would have been much better on offense.
The nepotism with Tuiaki probably made things way worse for me. In my mind, it is crazy Detmer was given the boot after 2 seasons and Tuiaki got 7.
