The nice thing about 12, is you can rationalize about SOS and other things for the first 5/6 and even 7 & 8, but 9-12,
everyone in America will start calling BS on doubling up on SEC/Big10 teams if you have 11-1 or 10-2 teams.

Look at Tulane, the craziest record... 10-2 and gonna play UCF again this week. But they beat Kansas State, and then lose to Southern Miss... A team like that deserves a shot to play in a playoff.

I can accept the top 12 as ranked right now for this season, IF they ended up that way with schedules built by a computer, meaning they played equally other teams OOC, and across the country. No conferences.

But as long as you have conferences, I think you either have PLAY IN games between the G5 top 4 teams for 2 slots and give the other 10 slots to the top 10, or in a day and age with super computers and the ability to interject multiple layers of complexity into the criteria to schedule just 12 games for every FBS team, then you program accordingly, you use end of season results (including bowls) to run the schedules, but by the time the national championship is played, everyone knows how next year begins...

And that would not only create much less BS about teams playing cellar dwellars or easy FCS schools by choice. Let the computer make it up, let the chips fall. And let the best 12 out of that be picked. Because I'd bet money that it won't be the same 12 each year in that format.

And to be true, a 32 team playoff, in a computer scheduled season, is easy, because no conference championships are played. the 32 starts this week, and that means you have 16 games where teams host based on record. That's more money to those teams. It's an advantage if they play in weather. But the losers are solid teams who still have time to go to bowls,

and the 8 games in the second round are suddenly VERY popular bowls played across the US, TV rights go nuts, travel, everything makes that round even better. And it's all played over Christmas season, 2 games a day, 4 in two days, so many ideas...

And the semis with 4 to become 2 are your big New Years bowls... With a NC game with the two winners...

Now that's a NC, because you never know... a team like Tulane could come in and surprise any team, any week.
