Players matter…
Recruiting rankings, while sometimes flawed based on exposure, are usually a strong indicator of talent and ability. Injuries or other issues might derail that but the 4/5 star kid, if healthy and in a good headspace, will typically contribute at a very high level. 7 or 8 out of 10.

Coaching though is critical to guide them once they’re on campus and against a P5 schedule do we have an incredible staff??

I saw something a couple days back that says we would be 11th or 12th in the Big12 recruiting rankings the past 4 or 5 years. Combine that with what appears to be an average staff and it doesn’t look like a highly successful combo. We can get the very good LDS kid who wants the BYU experience but it’s become harder and harder to do that so you’ll never probably get enough of them. That means we have to recruit others better…doesn’t appear that we’re great at that either.

Can BYU develop enough 3 star kids to win games…probably. Can we have enough on the field and on the bench to compete week in and week out with injuries and against P5 teams today? Not even close IMO. This current class isn’t gonna change that either.

We’re gonna have to rely on the diamonds in the rough and that’s fine. Plenty of underrated and hungry kids out there but then we’re going to have to coach them up and pray enough of them stay healthy. It will come together here and there but it’s going to be tough to be a consistent winner in that scenario IMO.
