Easy answer: An economy is only as strong as the goods and services produced
For quite some time now our economy has been utilizing debt to buy up a shrinking amount of goods and services being produced. Covid accelerated this with cheap and free money. That's obviously caused the inflation problem and killed discretionary spending, which is in turn killing profits and it starts to domino out of control
