I am sooooo sorry that happened to you. Absolutely unnecessary! Thinking about those pre LDS years for me so many years ago (joined in 1957)....ALL the church activities were fun and often involved non-members. (I was one of them!) I'm wondering if it has become a financial liability in the event someone got hurt. As you probably know, there are those people who would take advantage of the Church's deep pockets!
