My guess is that Jones had some connection with Dre Marin
Dre was SUU’s point guard the previous 5 years. Both were Phoenix area kids. Dre’s dad Jake is a very successful high school coach in the Phoenix area. My guess is when he decided to transfer That Dre or Jake reached out to him. I could find out, I played high school ball with Jake back in the day
