Sear it 2.5 minutes per side then roast it at 400 for 10 minutes per pound.
Smoked tri-tip is ok. Santa Maria style tri-tip is better. Traditionally, you’d sear it directly over an oak fire then raise the grate to roast it over the same fire. The above method is pretty close to the same thing on a traeger or even in your oven.

It’s a lean cut so it lends itself better to roasting than smoking/braising.
