I 'm not sure that's an underlying pattern, especially since I doubt WVU/Iowa St are considered a matched pair. More than that, it doesn't look like they've "matched pairs" for any other team's schedule.

Bottom line, I wouldn't read too much into the fact that one team (us) happens to have two sets of back-to-backs against rivals, broken up by two games against non-rivals.
