Another theory could be that UofA has been given some assurance they won't receive a reduced revenue share (so their campaign essentially worked) and his comments were an attempt to repair some PR damage they inflicted on the PAC, while still leaving out there the leverage of leaving to the Big12 if the final deal isn't satisfactory (don't give up any leverage until the deal is signed, sealed and delivered).
