Government because it is increasingly polarized and there are wackos on both sides and people are understanding the lobbyists plus even something that shouldn’t have been politicized like covid clearly was.

Media because they are incentivized to stoke fire and are partisan and only care about ratings and clicks not the truth.

Religion maybe because of the molestation scandal plus religion motivated terrorism but also other things like people leaving religion anyway.

So a story like “rest of us” which focuses on the government hiding/manipulating a pandemic with a complicit media seems to resonate much better than it would have 40 years ago.
