...Pete Newell passed away a year later. Plaisted really showed some development and a range of crafty NBA moves in the post that he had not shown previously. He showed off those moves prominently that season in our pre-season win over #6 Louisville when he torched them for 21 pts and 12 boards in the Las Vegas Invitational. We played #1 North Carolina in the championship game and he followed up with 24 pts and 17 boards vs the Tar Heels as BYU stayed with the #1 Tar Heels, took a 2 pt lead briefly in the 2nd half but couldn't keep up losing by 10. That Tar Heel team was really good and had 4 future NBA players on their roster. Plaisted was a man on the court and kind of stood toe-to-toe with Tyler Hansbrough. We just didn't have enough horses to stay with them.
Interestingly enough Mark Pope is an alumnus of the Pete Newell Big Man's camp.
